Texas fatal workplace accident statistics

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were a total of 457 fatal workplace accidents in Texas in 2008.

Of these 457 fatal accidents, most involved some type of highway incident, which accounted for 137 workplace deaths. Highway incidents have been the most frequent event leading to workplace deaths in Texas since 1994. In fact, the 137 fatal highway accidents accounted for 30% of the total work-related fatalities in Texas in 2008

The other most frequent events leading to a workplace fatality in Texas were falling from a height to a lower level, homicide and being struck by some type of object or piece of equipment. Together with highway incidents, these four types of events account for more than 60% of all the workplace fatal accidents in Texas.

In addition to these types of fatal workplace accidents, causes of fatal workplace injuries in Texas also included being hit by a motor vehicle or piece of mobile equipment, fires and explosions and being caught or compressed by a piece of equipment or object.

In 2008, 94% of fatal workplace accident victims in Texas were men. Almost three-fourths of all the workplace accident victims fell within the age range of 25 to 54 years old.

Based on fatal accident statistics from 2008, the two most dangerous industries in Texas are state construction and transportation and warehousing. Together these two industries accounted for 44% of the fatal workplace injuries in Texas.
