NTSB Decree Sends Important Signal for Dallas Drivers

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) advised earlier this week that it should prohibit the use of mobile phones by commercial truck drivers. NTSB’s recommendation comes in light of a number of recent 18-wheeler accidents that were caused in part by a big rig driver’s reckless use of a cell phone.

Research in Texas confirms the validity of the NTSB advisory opinion. The Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) concluded a study within the last month that found that reading or writing a text message can double a driver’s reaction time. In short, cell phones have a similar affect on driver competence as consuming alcohol.

The NTSB decree is important to Dallas drivers. Thousands of Texans are killed or injured as a result of 18-wheeler accidents. A disconcertingly large number of these accidents are the result of poorly trained, poorly supervised truck drivers. Using a cell phone while driving an 80,000-pound truck is exactly as dangerous as it sounds!
