A defect in a pull-down ladder may have cost a Little Elm woman her life earlier this week. Dedra King was taking care of a holiday task – pulling Christmas decorations from the attic above her garage – when she put her full weight on the ladder, causing a support beam to snap. Ms. King fell to the concrete floor below, landing on her head. Tragically, Ms. King had died when her husband checked on her several hours later.
Ladder-related accidents injure an astonishing 160,000 people every year, according to Consumer Reports. While user error and insufficient maintenance contribute to many of these accidents, there is growing concern among some industry observers that ladder manufacturers may be producing a product that isn’t as safe as it should be.
