NTSB Decree Sends Important Signal for Dallas Drivers

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) advised earlier this week that it should prohibit the use of mobile phones by commercial truck drivers. Tests Reveal Alcohol Contributed to Tragic Accident

As reported on this blog, this summer a 17-year-old driver rolling through the hills of Wise County killed four of his passengers when he attempted to pass another car during a no passing zone. During the illegal pass, the Fort Worth driver, Danny Ray Nalley, misjudged the speed and proximity of an oncoming Ford F-350 pickup and slammed his Ford Mustang into the truck head-on.

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety announced yesterday that their investigation into the crash had revealed that Nalley had a blood-alcohol level of 0.03 at the time of the accident. Whether Nalley had other chemicals in his body remains – and whether Nalley will face criminal charges – remains an open question. In addition to possible criminal charges, Nalley may also a new round of civil allegations based on the revelation that the high school senior had been drinking prior to the accident.

Three Die in Arlington Collision

A car crowded with five young people became a scene of horror and tragedy this morning when the driver lost control and slammed into a tree. Although it remains unclear how fast the car was travelling or whether alcohol was involved, the remains of the car speak volumes: the vehicle was split in half by the force of the impact. Two brothers, the driver and a front seat passenger, were killed immediately. A woman in the back seat died at the hospital shortly after the accident. Two more young men were rushed to the hospital. All of the people in the car were less than 21 years old.

Texas Study Shows Texting-and-Driving More Dangerous Than Most Realize

A study released earlier this week by the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) revealed that reading or writing a text while driving doubles a driver’s reaction time. Reaction times this slow make Texas drivers considerably less able to address highway hazards.

The TTI’s findings surprised experts in two ways in particular: the length of reaction time (from one or two seconds to three or four seconds) and the fact that findings showed little distinction between typing a text message and reading one. Also of note, drivers in the study were 11 times more likely to miss a flashing light when texting.

In recent years, texting while driving has caused a significant increase in the number of accidents. In 2009, for instance, almost 5,500 died in texting-related accidents and 500,000 were injured, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Dallas Driver Rolls SUV, Dies

A Dallas family is grieving today after their loved one died in a fatal accident last night. The collision happened early yesterday morning near the intersection of I-635 and Highway 80 in Mesquite, a Dallas suburb.
